Although season 8 of the CBS comedy is set to begin production in just a few days, Faris will not be returning. “The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career. I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience,” Faris said in a statement, per Variety. “While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”
“From the inception of Mom, Anna was the first and only choice for the role of Christy. We are so proud of the stories we have been able to tell during Anna’s seven years with us,” Warner Bros. Television, CBS, and Chuck Lorre Productions said in their statement. “We wish Anna all the best, and we thank her for her beautiful portrayal.
Many fans are sharing their surprise on Twitter, along with their support for Faris, who seems to have left the series to seek more opportunities. “I really like Anna Faris on Mom. And what happens between Faris & Allison Janney is some kind of magic jazz,” one fan tweeted on September 4. “The show has found its footing as an ensemble which has made it better, so losing the character will be bittersweet but understandable. I love Mom, am re-watching rn!”
Meanwhile, many fans are wondering what this means for the rest of the characters, as well as how the show will handle Faris’ exit.
Although some seem to hope for a “happy departure,” at least one fan is looking forward to angst.
No word yet on what the Mom writers have planned, but Deadline reporter Nellie Andreeva suggests that Faris’ exit was actually “finalized early into the show’s hiatus,” allowing the writers to plan the season without Christy. Only time will tell, but we know it will be worth watching.
