Zoe Saldana Is ‘Proud’ Of James Gunn And Disney For Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Rehire

The Guardians of the Galaxy family is back together and Zoe Saldana (Gamora) is thrilled — she also has no hard feelings against Disney for the James Gunn situation. Not that she would share them publicly if she did, since Disney is now the Avatar star’s employer on multiple fronts.

Disney rehired James Gunn as director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, after the infamous firing back in July. While promoting her new movie Missing Link, Zoe Saldana shared love for Gunn and gratitude to Disney for the final result. Here’s what she told ET:

James Gunn had been fired as writer/director of the movie back in July, after old offensive tweets resurfaced. Later in the same month, Zoe Saldana and fellow Guardians of the Galaxy cast members posted a statement showing their support for Gunn:

In August, there were reports that Disney would not rehire James Gunn. There was speculation about what would happen next for the film, and if Disney/Marvel would hire someone new. But no. It turns out, no one else was even considered. (Sorry, Taika Waititi.)

About two weeks ago, it was announced that Disney had rehired James Gunn, and that the decision had actually been made months ago. The announcement came after Gunn had already signed on to make DC’s The Suicide Squad and that movie is still happening, and Gunn plans to work on it first, before Guardians.

James Gunn thanked everyone for their support after he was rehired, since it came as a pleasant surprise to many fans, as well as MCU stars like Zoe Saldana.

It’s not clear when Guardians 3 might hit the big screen at this point, but we have some ideas. Meanwhile, it still needs to be explained how we might see Gamora again — not to mention Star-Lord, Groot, Drax, and others snapped by Thanos in the Avengers: Infinity War Decimation. Right now, Rocket Raccoon and Nebula seem to be the last Guardians standing. But Avengers: Endgame may change all of that.

Zoe Saldana’s new animated movie Missing Link opens in theaters on April 12. Saldana is also part of the multiple Avatar sequels in the works. Avengers: Endgame arrives April 26. Guardians 3, like a wizard in Lord of the Rings, will arrive precisely when it means to. Keep up with everything coming to the big screen with our 2019 movie release date schedule.

Priyanka Chopra Went to Her First Jonas Brothers Concert and Documented the Whole Thing

Sure, Priyanka Chopra might be married to a Jonas Brother; be close friends with Sophie Turner, who is dating another Jonas Brother; and have starred in a Jonas Brothers music video. But she still hadn’t actually been to a Jonas Brothers concert—until Saturday night, that is.

Chopra attended her first-ever Jonas Brothers concert (!) over the weekend in Atlanta. And naturally, she documented the whole thing on social media. Her verdict? She loved every single moment of it.

“My first ever #jonasbrothers show. And it was incredible!!! I’m so proud of these guys!! #Family ❤️🎉🙌🏽,” she captioned an Instagram post featuring her, the band, and, in a second picture, the Jonas parents.

Throughout the night, Chopra kindly shared all the backstage action with fans through her Instagram Stories, from the line outside the venue to show-goers sending well-wishes to her husband, Nick. Behold, her play-by-play of the evening.

First, she was whisked into the Tabernacle Atlanta, where the Jonas Brothers would be performing, past what looks like crowds of fans waiting to get in.

Instagram Stories/@priyankachopra

Then, she admitted for the record that, yes, this was her first Jonas Brothers concert ever. But she was willing to give away a backstage secret or two.

Later, she came across some big Jonas Brothers fans and offered to pass along their messages to the boys.

Fellow show-goers spotted Chopra at the show, and captured some cute interactions between her and Nick—including him singing “I love you” to his wife in the crowd. (Ah, think of all the Jonas Brothers fans who have fantasized about being in Chopra’s position.)

Clearly, it was a successful night (and first Jonas Brothers concert, surely of many) for Chopra. Here’s to much more fangirling in the future. Meanwhile, we’ll be here, waiting for more tour dates to be released. C’mon, JoBros!

Dumbo Box Office: The Baby Elephant Doesn’t Quite Soar

Disney has pretty much every one of its major brands in operation this year – with Marvel, Pixar, and Walt Disney Animation all putting out big titles – but one area where the studio is really going all-in this year is with its live-action remakes of animated classics. There are a total of four titles being released between now and the end of December, with movies including The Lion King, Aladdin, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, but after this past weekend one wonders if there might be some concern growing. Because while Tim Burton’s Dumbo did nab the top spot at the box office, it’s numbers aren’t exactly spectacular. Check out the Top 10 below, and join me after for analysis!

Overall this was a strong weekend at the box office, and Disney is seeing cash rolling in from two of the top three movies in the country, but the studio certainly must have had higher expectations for Dumbo. Prognostications from earlier this month estimated that the three day haul for the elephant-centric family feature would be around $50 million, and it’s not wonderful that the film fell $5 million short of that bar. It’s worse when you consider that the first predictions suggested a high end of $65 million.

Those estimates were proven to be too high, but when you look at the numbers, it’s not hard to figure out why the pros were a bit off. Disney has been having a tremendous amount of success in recent years with their live-action remakes of animated classics, and with the exception of the 2016 sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass they all arrived with strong openings. Prior to the release of Dumbo, the lowest first weekend total was Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, which made $67.9 million back in March 2015. That film wound up making over $200 million domestically – but at this point it doesn’t look like the 2019 release will be crossing that particular milestone.

It’s definitely all far from doom and gloom, however, thanks to a few positive factors. For starters, while Dumbo received a mostly tepid response from critics, those who went to go see it seem to be digging it, and delivered it an “A-” on CinemaScore. As for the numbers, the film is also obviously going to get a big boost from international ticket sales. It has already made over $70 million from foreign markets. So while it won’t be the billion dollar hit that Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland was back in 2010 (arguably the release that fueled this entire trend), it still will be a profitable release for Disney.

Dumbo with his feather in dumbo 2019

Sticking with the Mouse House for a minute, while Dumbo may not wind up being a member of the three comma club, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel absolutely will. And while the film didn’t quite get there this weekend, it most definitely will be happening in the next few days. The ticket sales abroad over the last three days, as well as the $20.5 million it made here at home, have now brought its global total to $990.6 million. To put that in some perspective, that means it is now the seventh most successful Marvel Cinematic Universe film, having passed the $880.2 million that Spider-Man: Homecoming made in 2017. What’s more, it’s not entirely out of the question that it could wind up beating Captain America: Civil War as well, which made $1.2 billion three years ago. That’s one hell of a launch for a hero expected to play a massive role in the franchise going forward.

Jumping back to the number two slot, Jordan Peele’s Us had a solid, if not unspectacular second weekend, dropping about 52 percent and adding $33.6 million to its domestic total. Not only was the money more than enough to push the film across the $100 million mark, but it also now looks like it is indeed on pace to make more money at the box office than Peele’s Get Out did in 2017. The director’s sophomore effort did have a budget four times the size of its predecessor – $20 million vs. $4.5 million – but that’s basically negligible when you consider the numbers that the release is ultimately looking at. Factoring in the money from outside North America, it’s already gone north of $174 million, and one nice trick it has in its back pocket is that it’s a feature that begs to be seen more than once. There is no questioning Peele’s status as a blockbuster director at this point, and expectations are only going to get higher for whatever he does next.

What’s also helping take a bit of heat off of Dumbo is the disappointing release of Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum – which sadly now exists as the worst opening of Matthew McConaughey’s career, and is the second big disappointment for the Oscar winner this year following the release of Serenity back in January. The movie had a much smaller release than most titles found in this weekend’s Top 10, only showing in 1,100 theaters nationwide, but it doesn’t exactly have a high per screen average either. It’s not all-together unexpected, as the film got a fairly tepid response when it premiered a few weeks ago at SXSW, and that buzz has been consistent since. Still, it won’t look good in the history books next to Korine’s last feature, Spring Breakers, which made a surprising $31.7 million in its worldwide theatrical run back in 2013.

Looking ahead, we should see some major shake ups in the Top Five this week, as we are about to see some anticipated features arrive in wide release. The first is another dose of kick-ass superhero action, this time arriving in the form of David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! (which is looking at a three day total between $40 and $45 million, and is expected to become the new number one movie in America). Also arriving, though, is the latest Stephen King adaptation: Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer’s Pet Sematary – which could not only steal some attention from the new DC Extended Universe feature, but also Us. How will things shake out? You’ll have to come back next Sunday for our box office column to find out.

How Much John Wick 3 Could Make In Its Opening Weekend

Keanu Reeves John Wick in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

The “Parabellum” of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum means “prepare for war.” The spring 2019 box office is going to be quite a minefield, but I have a feeling Mr. Wick will put up a worthy fight. He’s beaten the odds before.

John Wick 3 opens in theaters Friday, May 17, and BoxOfficePro is estimating it will make $30-40 million. That would set it up for the best debut of the franchise, especially if it opens on the higher end of that prediction.

Here are the past two opening weekends for the franchise to date:

John Wick opening weekend: $14,415,922 from 2,589 theaters

John Wick: Chapter 2 opening weekend: $30,436,123 from 3,113 theaters

As you can see, the second film’s opening doubled the first film’s take. It did have more screens, and hopefully The Powers That Be take the hint and open Chapter 3 on even more screens for even more chances at even more money.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say John Wick 3 will open to $43 million. Chapter 2 ended on a great cliffhanger, with John Wick declared excommunicado. There’s a $14 million global contract out on his head. He’s on the run with his post-puppy dog. If you caught up on the first two movies, wouldn’t you be curious how John Wick gets out of this latest mess? What if he doesn’t?

Plus, Chapter 3 adds Halle Berry in a major role, with her own lethal two dogs. Anjelica Huston is also in the mix, among the other new characters. Old favorites like Ian McShane’s Continental manager Winston; Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King; and Lance Reddick’s Charon will also be back.

Director Chad Stahelski — who met Keanu Reeves as his stunt double for The Matrix, which is just a fun fact on that movie’s 20th anniversary — has said John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is 20% more movie than Chapter 2. It has more characters, and more action by at least three sequences. So the body count is substantially higher. John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2 were more two-act stories, he added, and in Parabellum there are two storylines going on, so it’s more of a three-act film.

There seems to be a lot of interest in this movie, so I’m sticking with my $43 million domestic opening guess, and I’ll go ahead and lock in a high total worldwide gross guess of $210 million. It’s not even clear how many countries will be getting John Wick 3, and when, but the trend is upward so I’m sticking with it.

Here are the total grosses for the previous two films, per Box Office Mojo:

John Wick

Domestic: $43,037,835

Foreign: $45,723,826

Worldwide total: $88,761,661

John Wick: Chapter 2

Domestic: $92,029,184

Foreign: $79,510,703

Worldwide total: $171,539,887

It’s kind of surprising these films don’t make more money in theaters, but they do seem to — ahem — make a killing with fans in repeat viewings at home. Just through sheer buzz, there seems to be a lot of interest in Parabellum, so I’m pretty confident it will have the best opening of the franchise.

That said, there’s a lot of competition out there. May 10 has Ryan Reynolds’ Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, with Aladdin and BrightBurn following John Wick 3 on May 24. The month is ending with Godzilla: King of the Monsters. There’s not going to be a lot of time to make money, at least in the domestic opening.

Follow every opening with our 2019 movie release date schedule, and post your own John Wick 3 opening prediction below. Do you plan to see the movie when it first opens May 17-19, or wait a bit? Does it depend on reviews, or you wouldn’t care?

The Kardashian-Jenners Just Addressed So Many of Their Controversies in a Huge ‘New York Times’ Profile

Sunday night marks the premiere of the 16th season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians—which, frankly, is wild. Since the show first debuted in the fall of 2007, the Kardashians and Jenners have become basically ubiquitous in pop culture, and along with the fame and the money, there also comes controversy. A lot of it.

Ahead of the upcoming season, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, and their momager Kris Jenner talked with the New York Times about the business side of the family—and in the process ended up speaking out (on the record!) about the numerous headline-making dramas that have affected the family over the past year.

Let’s break it all down by controversy.

The Khloé-Tristan-Jordyn Drama

ICYMI, Woods is Kylie Jenner’s (maybe-former?) best friend whom NBA player Tristan Thompson, a.k.a. the father of Khloé’s daughter True, reportedly kissed. Yeah, it’s a lot. (You can catch up on the saga here.)

In the wake of the news, fans noticed that one Lip Kit Kylie created with Woods had its price slashed online, which was interpreted as a shady move by Kylie. Not true, says the cosmetics mogul: The product was actually on sale as part of a packaging change, and it had happened weeks before the gossip story broke. “That is just not my character. I would never do something like that and when I saw it, I was like, thrown back,” Kylie told the Times. “Jordyn knows I didn’t actually put it on sale.”

Being a “Self-Made” Billionaire

The Internet got very worked up when Forbes declared Kylie the youngest self-made billionaire, given the privilege into which she was born even before she launched her wildly successful cosmetics company.

Despite the controversy, Kylie hasn’t commented much about the honor until now. “I can’t say I’ve done it by myself,” she says. “If they’re just talking finances, technically, yes, I don’t have any inherited money. But I have had a lot of help and a huge platform.”

Fyre Fest

Supermodel Kendall Jenner was one of influencers hired to promote the disastrous Fyre Fest music festival in the Bahamas that spawned not one, but two, documentaries. She says she wasn’t involved in the event itself, but she did learn from the experience.

“You get reached out to by people to, whether it be to promote or help or whatever, and you never know how these things are going to turn out, sometimes it’s a risk,” she said. “I definitely do as much research as I can, but sometimes there isn’t much research you can do because it’s a starting brand, and you kind of have to have faith in it and hope it will work out the way people say it will.”

Critiques of Their Sponsorship Choices

The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil has become one of the family’s most vocal critics—frequently calling out the images they put forth on social media and the brands, like Flat Tummy Tea, that they choose to partner with. Jamil recently commented on Khloé’s Instagram: “If you’re too irresponsible to: a) own up to the fact that you have a personal trainer, nutritionist, probable chef, and a surgeon to achieve your aesthetic, rather than this laxative product…And b) tell them the side effects of this NON-FDA approved product, that most doctors are saying [isn’t] healthy. Side effects such as: Possible Flat Tummy Tea side effects are cramping, stomach pains, diarrhea and dehydration… Then I guess I have to. It’s incredibly awful that this industry bullied you until you became this fixated on your appearance. That’s the media’s fault. But now please don’t put that back into the world, and hurt other girls, the way you have been hurt.

The Beach Bum Gives Matthew McConaughey The Worst Opening Of His Career

Not alright, alright, alright at all. No one needs to cry for Matthew McConaughey, but The Beach Bum just marked his lowest opening for a film opening on over 1,000 screens. The Oscar winner leads Harmony Korine’s all-star cast — which also includes Isla Fisher, Snoop Dogg, Zac Efron, Jonah Hill, Martin Lawrence, and even Jimmy Buffett as himself.

Matt Reeves’ Batman Birthday Post Had Fans Searching For Movie Clues

It’s Batman’s 80th birthday and the old man is still going strong. The next big item on Batman’s agenda is a new movie that’s being developed by Matt Reeves. The director has kept details about the film under tight wraps, but in honor of Batman’s birthday, he may have dropped a little hint that movie fans are trying to dissect. Check out this tweet from Reeves that seems to be teasing a new logo for The Batman movie.

Batman has had a bit of a rough time in cinema over the past few years, with some uncertainty as to what was going to happen to Ben Affleck’s version of the iconic character. While people liked Ben Affleck’s portrayal of the Dark Knight in the DCEU, it was still unknown if the actor would return to reprise the role in a solo film. The experience was apparently rough enough that Affleck decided to exit as the character, even while Matt Reeves was developing the first solo Batman movie since The Dark Knight Rises.

Simply known as The Batman, not many details are known about the movie. It will supposedly feature a younger Batman and will be a noir detective story that places emphasis on Batman’s crime-solving ability. That sounds awesome but fans are hungry for more details as Reeves preps for the 2021 release date.

Well, Matt Reeves may have given another small tease hidden inside of his birthday shoutout for Batman. The writer-director tweeted a picture of Detective Comics #27, the first appearance of Batman, in honor of Batman’s 80th birthday. However, it didn’t take long for fans to notice what was behind the comic. It appears to be an out-of-focus screenplay for The Batman which was given away from the giant bat symbol on the cover.

Fans are speculating that this is an all-new bat symbol for Matt Reeves’ film, though it’s difficult to actually tell if that’s the case. The image appears similar to the fat bat symbol used for Affleck’s Batman, but it could be altered in various ways. Some are theorizing that it’s based on Batman’s first ever logo, which is right there in Detective Comics #27.

Whatever the case may be, it’s clear people are ready to start getting more details about The Batman. Casting is one of the biggest concerns, with Matt Reeves apparently looking for a big name actor, but so far there are no confirmations. Hopefully, we start getting news about that soon.

The Batman is slated to arrive in theaters on June 25, 2021. There are still a ton of questions about the project so bone up on everything there is to know about The Batman with our handy guide. In the meantime, check out what’s coming to theaters this year with our 2019 movie release guide.

Meghan Markle’s Been Using a Genius Makeup Trick Nobody Noticed Until Now

Meghan Markle is many things. She’s the Duchess of Sussex, a former actress, a feminist, a brilliant speechwriter, a lover of dogs, and…a really great makeup artist.

Although Markle calls in a makeup artist for big events (like good friend Daniel Martin at the royal wedding), she often does her makeup herself for engagements—as does her sister-in-law Kate Middleton. Considering how flawless the Duchess of Sussex always looks, that’s super impressive. And even though every time she leaves the house, there are literally thousands of images snapped of her, most people hadn’t noticed that Markle was employing this genius makeup trick until now: overlining her lips.

The technique is a subtle way to give the lips a fuller effect without necessarily adding color. As we know, Markle usually opts for more neutral shades of lip color and avoids bolder tones like reds. “The one time she did a red lip, she just didn’t feel comfortable in it,” Martin has said. “She likes to talk and she’s not a fussy person, so she doesn’t want to have to worry about anything.”

The trick is to choose a liner that is a shade darker than your actual lip color and then draw a line just outside the natural shape of your lips.

Sometimes people assume that overlining the lips will lead to a look that looks cartoonish or too dramatic, but that’s not necessarily the case. Of course, if you’re looking to make more of a statement, you can draw further outside the lines or pick a super-bold shade, but that’s not Duchess Meghan’s style. She prefers colors like Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipstick in Very Victoria ($34) which is more of a matte dusty rose.

The subtlety of it all is probably why nobody noticed what she was doing for so long.

Wouldn’t it be great if Markle and Middleton could just start a royal YouTube channel and teach us their beauty tricks in weekly tutorials? I guess a girl can dream.

Mark Hamill Is Voicing Chucky In Child’s Play, And His Announcement Was Perfect

While original horror films like Us are absolutely killing it right now, those who like the classics will also be treated later this summer. A Child’s Play remake starring Aubrey Plaza is on the way and there will be an all-new Chucky terrorizing some poor innocent family. While Brad Dourif provided the voice of Chucky in the original franchise, someone else will be handling the remake and his voice certainly carries a lot of force. Mark Hamill will voice Chucky, and he announced it in an awesome way on social media.

You may know Mark Hamill best from his role as Luke Skywalker in some space movie called Star Wars, but he’s also a prominent voice actor. Many fans consider him to be the best version of the Joker, having voiced the character in Batman: The Animated Series and several other Batman projects. He’s also voiced a number of other cartoons, which include Regular Show, Adventure Time, and Metalocalypse.

Given his versatile voice work, it’s not that much of a surprise to find him turning his sights to horror. After all, if you had a doll with Luke Skywalker’s voice say he wanted to be your best friend, you’d trust that doll no matter how sketchy he was.

In a special announcement for WonderCon 2019, Mark Hamill announced on Twitter that he would be the new voice of Chucky for the Child’s Play remake. Hamill teased that “wicked fun” was about to begin and accompanied the post with a video that had a pitch perfect ending of Hamill giving a creepy smile. It was a great way to announce his casting and I’m sure that it went down really well at WonderCon.

Written by Tyler Burton Smith and directed by Lars Klevberg, the Child’s Play remake stars Aubrey Plaza as a single mother who gives her son a Buddi doll, unaware of its evil nature. Lots of stabbing and creepy doll shenanigans are sure to follow.

It’s unclear if there will be any sort of live-action work for Mark Hamill, seeing as how in the original films Chucky was a serial killer who moved his soul into a doll through voodoo. However, the remake has hinted that Chucky might just be a wayward A.I., which is a little less fun, but that doesn’t mean that the film won’t still be good and scary.

If you do want to see Mark Hamill in live-action then you can check him out in History’s Knightfall, the Knights Templar series now in its second season. You can also see him play a different sort of knight in Star Wars: Episode IX, in which he will reprise his role as Luke Skywalker. That film arrives in theaters later this year on December 20.

Child’s Play arrives in theaters on June 21.
