Body-Positive Influencers Respond to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2018 With Their Own Lingerie Photos

On December 2, the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show aired on ABC. Though in recent years, the broadcast has attracted criticism for its lack of body diversity on the runway, it faced additional scrutiny because of comments made by the brand’s executives ahead of the 2018 taping. Even before that, though, hashtags like #ImNoAngel, #WeAreAlltheFantasy, #WeAreAllAngels, and #BeautyBeyondSize have emerged to challenge the narrow beauty and body ideals promoted by the show’s casting. And this year, Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring, Danielle Brooks, Nicolette Mason, and other voices in the body-positive conversation have chimed in, sharing photos of themselves in lingerie on social media to demonstrate that people of all sizes are sexy.

Graham posted pictures of several curve models who have walked in Addition Elle’s lingerie fashion show, including Tabria Majors, Precious Lee, and Sabina Karlsson. (Pring thanked her on Instagram, writing: “Thanks for reminding me how much I love walking down the runway in my underwear.”)

Danielle Brooks, an ambassador for Lane Bryant’s Cacique, shared the brand’s most recent lingerie campaign, released ahead of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Mason, who co-founded Premme with Gabi Gregg, teased an upcoming lingerie set: “Not your angel… We made this set since VS won’t.”

Since Victoria’s Secret’s televised fashion show first aired, it has featured a lineup of slim, sample-sized models that, though racially diverse, doesn’t represent a range of body types. In November, Vogue published an interview with Ed Razek, CMO of L Brands (which owns Victoria’s Secret), and Monica Mitro, EVP of public relations at Victoria’s Secret, in which they defend its approach to casting. “If you’re asking if we’ve considered putting a transgender model in the show or looked at putting a plus-size model in the show, we have… We market to who we sell to, and we don’t market to the whole world,” Razek said. Victoria’s Secret has since issued an apology for his comments regarding transgender models, but did not walk back the remarks on size inclusivity.

After the Vogue interview, ThirdLove took out a full-page ad in the New York Times, writing an open letter to Victoria’s Secret, responding not only to Razek’s comments about curvy and trans models, but also to his apparent jab at the brand. (“We’re nobody’s third love. We’re their first love. And Victoria’s Secret has been women’s first love from the beginning,” he told Vogue.)

U.K.-based Simply Be also staged a size-inclusive lingerie show—complete with wings.

In a statement to Glamour on the day of the taping, Mitro emphasized other forms of diversity in the show: “The women in this year’s show are from all over the world. They represent many stages of a modeling career, and each has her own story to tell. Scrutinizing women’s bodies of any size related to the Victoria’s Secret brand is unfortunate because it puts judgment on women of any body type. Victoria’s Secret believes the body positivity dialogue should be positive. It should not be done by putting other women down, including the 60 women that are excited to be in our Fashion Show. These women represent so many important aspects of diversity that should be celebrated beyond solely focusing on their bodies.”

With these posts, body-positive models and influencer argue that women of all sizes are worthy of being considered the “fantasy”—whether that means walking down the runway or simply feeling good in their lingerie. It’s not the first time they use social media to call out Victoria’s Secret and its annual show: Last year, Graham posted a photo from the Addition Elle runway, photoshopped to a pair of angel wings referencing the Victoria’s Secret Angels. “Got my wings…my Addition Elle Wings!” she wrote.

Michelle Obama’s Advice to Meghan Markle? ‘Don’t Be in a Hurry to Do Anything’

Michelle Obama has some words of wisdom for Meghan Markle—and, honestly, she might be one of the few people in the world who can actually relate to how the Duchess of Sussex might be feeling in her new, very public life. They have a lot in common: both are highly-accomplished American women of color who have been thrust into the spotlight in part because of the jobs of their husbands—and then scrutinized for everything from their fashion choices to their work.

“Like me, Meghan probably never dreamt that she’d have a life like this, and the pressure you feel—from yourself and from others—can sometimes feel like a lot,” Obama said in a new interview with Good Housekeeping.

“So my biggest piece of advice would be to take some time and don’t be in a hurry to do anything. I spent the first few months in the White House mainly worrying about my daughters, making sure they were off to a good start at school and making new friends before I launched into any more ambitious work. I think it’s okay—it’s good, even—to do that,” she continued.

It may be simple, but that’s pretty sound advice. It seems like the duchess may already be following it, too. While she has already taken on her first royal tour and a big solo project with the Together cookbook created with the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen, she has yet to announce any of her official patronages, though much hard work is certainly going on behind the scenes.

The two women also share a passion for girls’ and women’s empowerment. “What I’d say is that there’s so much opportunity to do good with a platform like that—and I think Meghan can maximize her impact for others, as well her own happiness, if she’s doing something that resonates with her personally,” Obama also said.

We should all keep that in mind when thinking about how we approach our own jobs and projects—even if the world won’t be watching our every move. And we will continue to hold out hope for a joint initiative between these two women.

Halsey Calls Out the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show’s ‘Lack of Inclusivity’

Halsey, who performed at this year’s Victoria Secret Fashion Show, called out the annual lingerie spectacle on Instagram Sunday night (December 2).

“I have adored the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show since I was young,” the “Bad at Love” singer posted as the runway special was airing on ABC. “Performing this year alongside other amazing artists and hardworking models/friends was supposed to be the best night of my yea. However, after I filmed the performance, some comments were made regarding the show that I simply cannot ignore.”

Halsey is most likely referring to the controversial comments Victorias’ Secret Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek made about the show’s not-so-inclusive casting history. “It’s like, why doesn’t your show do this? Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy,” he said.

Several transgender models took issue with Razek’s statement, including Andreja Pejic, who wrote on Instagram, “It’s really sad when you see powerful people in our industry holding such backward views and being so comfortable in expressing them on a public platform.”

Now, Halsey is speaking out. “As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have no tolerance for a lack of inclusivity,” she wrote. “Especially not one motivated by stereotype. If you’re on my page because you watched my performance tonight, please allow me to instead direct your attention to GLSEN: An organization that offers services aimed at protecting LGBTQ+ youth. And with respect to those youth targeted by these comments in a world where they have been made to feel “other,” I have made a sizable donation in their honor.”

She continued, “If you are a trans person reading this, and these comments made you feel alienated or invalidated please know that you have allies. We stand in solidarity, and complete and total acceptance is the only ‘fantasy’ that I support.”

Michelle Obama Says She’s Done With the ‘Lean In’ Philosophy

Michelle Obama‘s memoir, Becoming, debuted just two weeks ago—and on Friday, Penguin Random House announced that it had already surpassed other titles to break a record: It’s the best-selling book to be released so far in the U.S., with more than 2 million copies sold in the U.S. and Canada. Safe to say, it’s a smash hit, and she’s currently on a speaking tour to promote the book. During her stop in Brooklyn last night, the busy former First Lady spoke out about how she manages it all—and she didn’t give the advice you might think.

Obama spoke frankly about the aspirational—and, to be honest, exhausting—expectation that it’s possible to “have it all.” And while she might not have been able to offer solid advice about how to achieve that bliss, she had some far more useful wisdom to dish out instead.

“Marriage still ain’t equal, y’all. It ain’t equal. I tell women that whole ‘you can have it all’—mmm, nope, not at the same time, that’s a lie,” she said. “It’s not always enough to lean in because that shit doesn’t work.”

The “lean in” phrase refers to a philosophy set forth by Sheryl Sandberg in 2013 that uses the metaphor to argue that women should assert themselves more in the workplace. Back then, it drew controversy for implying that women were holding themselves back from their careers; more recently, it’s drawn backlash for not being as effective as Sandberg originally hoped. In 2017, she spoke frankly about how women weren’t necessarily much better off for it.

Back to Obama, though. In a wonderfully genuine moment, apparently the crowd of New Yorkers went wild at the light cursing utilized by Obama, before she apologized to the kids in the audience: “I thought we were at home, y’all,” she said. “I was getting real comfortable up in here. All right, I’m back now. Sometimes that stuff doesn’t work.”

She also talked about the section in the book that addresses how she and Obama went to marriage counseling.

“People are like, ‘Oh, why’d she talk about marriage counseling?'” she said. “I’m like, ‘Duh.’ Marriage is hard, you know. It is hard . . . I love my husband, and we have a great marriage, and we’ve had a great marriage, but marriage is hard work.”

Obama also cautioned against rushing into marriage: “Marriage is a lot of work, and it should be. It’s too independent individuals who are trying to come together to build a life forever.”

We’ll always love it when Obama keeps it real with us, swears included. Unfortunately, two stops on her tour have been postponed: She announced on Sunday that she’d be pushing back her Paris and Berlin stops to fly to the U.S. and attend former President George H. W. Bush’s funeral.

Ariana Grande Temporarily Gave Up on True Love Because She Was Hangry, and Honestly, Same

We all know (and love) the celebrities that aren’t afraid to keep it real by giving us glimpses of just how relatable they are: There’s Rihanna, who once dodged a bouquet at a friend’s wedding, and there’s also Chrissy Teigen, who was once filmed using a spatula to try to save some spilled breast milk. And once in a while, just like us when we’re hungry, celebrities will say things they don’t mean. Exhibit A: Ariana Grande’s most recent series of tweets.

In a since-deleted tweet from Saturday, December 1, the singer declared that “true love doesn’t exist,” and claimed she doesn’t want a “next.” The “next,” of course, is a reference to the artist’s most recent single, “Thank U, Next,” which dropped in early November following her split from SNL cast member Pete Davidson—and her tweet came one day after she dropped her music video, which broke YouTube and Vevo’s record for most views within 24 hours. Fans were concerned about Grande, until she broke her silence with a bold statement: She was just hungry.

The singer hopped on Twitter again later in the day Saturday to add to her earlier declaration. She said: “true love might exist i was just hungry.”

However, it seems like there still might be some of that original sentiment yet: “but still, fuck that,” she tweeted later.

Well, there ya have it: True love may still exist—the singer was simply blinded by extreme hunger.

Ariana Grande Already Teased Her Next Single in the ‘Thank U, Next’ Video

To say that Ariana Grande‘s “Thank U, Next” has become the song of 2018 would be an understatement. The single was released without a formal announcement following Grande’s sudden breakup with SNL cast member Pete Davidson—and it promptly became an overnight hit. Then, on Friday, the singer gave the world her music video for the single, which has racked up more than 75 million YouTube views in 48 hours.

But Grande’s a busy woman, and you can’t expect her to rest on these latest laurels for long. She confirmed on Saturday to a Twitter fan that she has a whole new album on the way—and that there’s a hidden reference to one of its upcoming singles tucked right in plain sight in the “Thank U, Next” video. Best of all? It honors her best friends.

It started when a fan asked, “Was the instrumental in the beginning really 7 rings? Cause it SLAPS.” “Seven Rings” is reportedly the name of her next single (or one of them), and the beginning of the “Thank U, Next” does sound a lot like what’s rumored to be a clip of “Seven Rings”. Grande confirmed in her response: “mhmm.”

“So is the album like done DONE,” one fan followed up.

“yes but i keep writing things i want to add,” replied Grande.

And that’s when a fan asked a critical question about the origin of “Seven Rings”: “can u let us know who has the 7 rings?”

“me, vic, courtney, alexa, tayla, njomza, kaydence (and my mom and nonna so technically nine but they got theirs after song was done),” Grande responded.

So, uh, how did everyone get them? One fan decided to ask:

“well…………. twas a pretty rough day in nyc,” the singer replied. “My friends took me to tiffany’s. we had too much champagne. i bought us all rings. ? it was very insane and funny. & on the way back to the stu njomza was like ‘bitch, this gotta be a song lol’. so we wrote it that afternoon.”

It’s so great Grande’s best friends have had her back during these past few weeks—and the hidden tribute to these supportive women in a song about her exes? Brilliant.

‘SNL’ Just Trolled All Your Favorite Netflix Shows

Ah, December: a time for spiked eggnog, cheesy Hallmark movie marathons, and avoiding relatives’ highly invasive questions about when you’re planning to start a family. But perhaps the most rewarding part of the winter month? SNL turning out some of its best content—and last night (December 1) was no exception.

Hosted by Claire Foy, the sketch comedy show spared no expense for anyone, with Alec Baldwin reprising his role as a disgruntled President Trump and the cast hilariously spoofing the grandparents from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But it was the hilarious trolling of Netflix’s 2019 lineup—the home of Foy’s own hit series The Crown—that made us laugh.

At the top of the episode, Foy appears in a commercial parody poking fun at the sheer magnitude of available content for streaming on Netflix. As a male voiceover explains, “We’re spending billions of dollars and making every show in the world. How do we do it? We buy everything!”

“It’ll take 12 human lifetimes to watch all of our content!” the narration adds (truth).

The skit involves several of the cast members sitting around a conference table and pitching potential ideas for the streaming service. “This show is about a girl named Ginny,” cast member Heidi Gardner’s character says, prompting a Netflix executive to immediately throw money at her.

“We loved Claire Foy so much, we’re sending her back to high school,” explains the voiceover. “It’s Saved By The Crown!”

“…We’ve also got that comedy, like Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, or Leslie Jones in a Van Getting Batteries!” the voiceover continues.

On top of trolling Netflix, SNL also poked fun at major cable network shows, like HSN and MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Watch Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ Incredible Pre-Wedding Sangeet Dances

The wedding weekend of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas is officially underway. Throughout the weekend’s festivities, the bride and groom have, for the most part, kept an understandably low profile on social media (hey, they’re busy). Yesterday, however, we got a glimpse of the festivities in a joint post put up just hours after they reportedly tied the knot in the first of two ceremonies this weekend. But it wasn’t of the wedding: Instead, it was a gallery of the stunning Mehendi pre-wedding ceremony with family and friends late last week. This morning, we got another look at the festive long weekend: Chopra posted a peek into her decked-out pre-wedding sangeet on Friday night, and it looks incredible.

Among the many pre-wedding events that take place, the sangeet, which takes place in the evening after the Mehendi ceremony, is one of the most lively. Sangeet ceremonies bring together both sides of the soon-to-be-family with music, dance routines, and singing—and since we know that both the bride and groom boast impressive musical chops (let’s not forget Priyanka’s pop career), it’s no surprise that the evening turned into a full-on musical production.

Unfolding on an enormous stage, the Chopra-Jonas sangeet included enormous musical performances from the bride and groom, as well as their families (we see you, Joe Jonas). In Chopra’s own post about the ceremony, the actress addressed how special this marriage ceremony really was to her:

“It all began as a fierce song & dance competition between the families but ended, as always, as a huge celebration of love,” Chopra captioned her Instagram of the event. “Nick and I were looking forward to the Sangeet (musical evening), another pre wedding ritual.. and to see what each side had put together. And what a performance it was. Each family telling our stories through song and dance, filled with lots of laugher and love. We were both filled with gratitude for the effort, the love and the laughter and will carry the memories of this special evening for the rest of our lives. It is an amazing start to a lifetime of togetherness for our families and friends.. #grateful.”

There was a stage. There was fancy colorful lighting. There were incredibly choreographed dance numbers. In short, this celebration was one for the books.

See the Gorgeous Pics From Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ Pre-Wedding Mehendi Ceremony

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ wedding weekend has already kicked off in India—in fact, they’ve already tied the knot, according to Saturday reports. But no, we don’t have any wedding photos yet (although you can be sure we’ll update you when we do). But the couple did jointly post a series of images on Instagram just hours after they reportedly finished their first ceremony, a Christian one in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. (The Hindu ceremony will be held tomorrow.)

The mini-gallery features a series of photos from the couple’s Mehendi ceremony, a Hindu pre-wedding ritual that takes place usually two days before the wedding. Per People this is a ceremony in which “all of the women in the bride and groom’s families, along with close friends, gather together while the bride has elaborate henna designs applied to her hands and feet. Guests will usually get a few designs on their hands as well.”

As the two wrote in their captions, “One of the most special things that our relationship has given us is a merging of families who love and respect each other’s faiths and cultures. And so planning our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so so Amazing. An important part for the girl in an Indian wedding is the Mehendi.

Once again we made it our own and it was an afternoon that kicked off the celebrations in the way we both dreamed.”

Jonas posted the same gallery and caption. (Hey, they were busy).

Stunning, no? Both Priyanka and Nick were wearing Khosla Jani by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, according to a statement from the company—and the brand did the stunning jewelry too. “A Mehendi calls for joyous and exuberant celebration. Priyanka’s outfit is a burst of colour. Nick’s aqua is the perfect balance. They looked like a dream together,” it read.

The same company was also apparently the brains behind the event, which was themed “The Blue City,” a reference to Jodhpur. “There’s a distinct joie de vivre and playfulness as America mingles with India too, with both a cricket and baseball match to boot,” a statement from the company read.
