Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Reaction to Meghan and Harry’s Baby Will Warm Your Heart

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are officially parents, and no one is more thrilled for them than their in-laws, Kate Middleton and Prince William. This was confirmed via a message sent out from the royal family’s official Twitter account shortly after Baby Sussex came into the world.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed [of the birth] and are delighted with the news,” the message reads.

Also excited, naturally, is Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, who flew into London in mid-April ahead of her first grandchild’s arrival. “The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage,” the palace also announced on Twitter. “Her Royal Highness and the baby are both doing well.”

Check out the tweets for yourself, below:

Celebrities are also reacting to this royal baby news. “Hearts are leaping for a beautiful, wondrous and healthy baby boy! Sending much love and wishes for every blessing across the pond today and everyday,” Markle’s Suits co-star Sarah Rafferty tweeted.

“It’s a boy! Congrats to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry,” Ryan Seacrest posted. “The royal baby is 7th in line to the British throne…and the latest entry in the race for the iron throne.”

Below, a few more reactions worth mentioning:

Meghan Markle’s royal birth plan is already so different than Kate Middleton‘s in several ways. For one, it was Prince Harry who faced the cameras today, not Markle. Furthermore, the Duke of Sussex noted that it will be at least two days before the public sees photos of Markle and their newborn son. He did assure fans, though, that Baby Sussex is healthy and Markle is doing well.

Does Gucci’s New Lipstick Ad Make You Uncomfortable? Good.

Diversity has become more than a buzzword in the beauty industry. At this point, it’s a pre-requisite to having a successful brand. Ads are embracing this and finally are more reflective of the women buying the products they’re selling than ever. Still, there’s one ideal that hasn’t been challenged in a big way yet, and that’s the idea of “perfect” teeth. Well, until now.

Gucci Beauty’s new campaign for the launch of 58 lipsticks—the brand’s first cosmetics launch under creative director Alessandro Michele—aims to flip the script on what’s considered conventionally beautiful. According to the brand, Michele’s vision for the line is to represent complete liberty and self expression, and the campaign “conveys a clear message that authentic beauty lies in imperfection.”

The campaign features four print images, a close up on each of four diverse models, as well as a video inspired by’ 80s infomercials. The most attention-grabbing of the bunch is a close-up of model and singer Dani Miller’s teeth, which have large gaps that she proudly displays in a smile.

It’s inspiring to see such a joyful display of unconventional beauty, especially coming from one of the largest and most prestigious fashion houses in the world. While there have been successful models with teeth gaps (Slick Woods and Georgia May Jagger, to name a few) their smiles tend to fit squarely into a singular type of imperfection: the gap is always small and straight in the middle of pearly white teeth. The other three images feature more real and raw poses uncommon in beauty ads such as snarling and a model sticking out her tongue, rather than a forced smile or a sexy pout.

On her Instagram, Miller wrote a heartfelt caption about her journey to self acceptance and the pressures of fitting in: “Growing up you go through an evolution of overcoming insecurity’s and healing from being bullied or the intense pressures of fitting in the perfect cookie cutter traditional style of beauty and this @guccibeautycampaign celebrating me and my friends own style of beauty has felt like a coming out party and a reiteration of feeling comfortable and proud to be myself. A celebration for the beautiful freaks shedding even more of my insecurity’s and doubts, there is space for everyone to be themselves even in the beauty and fashion world! Hope it inspires everyone especially the youth to love their quirks even more and feel beautiful and powerful with their true self! Hate and exclusion is so washed out.”

While there has been a positive response overall (many commenters on both Miller’s and Gucci’s posts have shared how meaningful it is to see themselves represented, especially from such a huge brand), there’s also been a surprising amount of negativity surrounding the photo. Comments saying the image doesn’t make people want to purchase lipstick or even “calling out” Gucci for promoting unhealthy habits are still live on the post. Even on the beauty watchdog Instagram Estee Laundry, a platform used to call for more representation and transparency in the beauty industry, results were split when the account posted a poll asking its followers about their thoughts on the campaign. (Glamour has reached out to the page for exact numbers.)

The whole thing goes to show just how ingrained conventional beauty standards are. We’re now more comfortable with women who look “different,” but still only in very specific ways. The only way change will happen is through brands using their platforms to showcase that beauty comes in many forms. And Gucci is a great place to start.

How to Shop Like Kate Middleton: Roundup of the Duchess of Cambridge’s Favorite Fashion

Since her university days, the world has been paying attention to Kate Middleton and her style. It became clear that her fashion choices were the subject of public interest early on, when she sold out a dress simply by wearing it when she announced her engagement to Prince William.

That was 2010; she’s since become a Duchess, had three children, and gained a sister-in-law. Through her wardrobe, Middleton has shown a proclivity for tailored, traditional silhouettes, like sheath dresses and skirt suits. (Though, she’ll throw us the occasional curve ball, and by that, we mean high-waisted trousers.) The Duchess of Sussex has Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy, but the Duchess of Cambridge has Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, her unofficial couturier for her most important engagements—tours, red carpets, christenings, even other royal nuptials. Other go-to British designers include Jenny Packham, Emilia Wickstead, and Temperley London, and Catherine Walker.

When it comes to the high-end pieces in her closet, Middleton has been known to repurpose and re-wear many of her designer garments, often years after she was first photographed with them. She’s also been known to enjoy a good high/low moment: Sure, she’ll wear a one-of-a-kind gown to an official function one day, but she’ll be photographed wearing a Zara dress the following week. And this approach has meant that, over the years, global audiences have been introduced to U.K. retailers like L.K. Bennett, Reiss, GOAT, and Whistles, which are much more affordable than some of the brands the Duchess wears—which means her fans can shop them.

Ahead, we compile some of the Duchess of Cambridge’s favorite shoppable fashion pieces. The tiaras and custom Alexander McQueen you can’t cop. But the Duchess’ go-to heels? Those you can add to your closet ASAP.

Prince Harry Just Gave a Very Sweet Update About Meghan Markle and the Royal Baby

The royal baby has finally arrived, with as much fanfare as you’d expect. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their first child, a boy, early Monday, May 6. “We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz,” the palace announced via Instagram.

We also know that Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, is with her daughter, son-in-law, and new grandchild at their home in Frogmore Cottage. While it has not been confirmed by palace officials, it would seem that the Duchess of Sussex did indeed have a home birth based on the reports coming out of Windsor and the fact that Prince Harry stepped outside of their home to update reporters on the happy occasion.

Harry was all smiles, naturally, and said, “I’m just over the moon.”

“I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy early this morning,” he said. “A very healthy boy. Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It’s been the most amazing experience I could have possibly imagined. How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension.”

“But we’re both absolutely thrilled,” he continued. “And so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been amazing and we just wanted to share this with everybody.”

Watch his full statement for yourself, below:

Prince Harry went on to say that the baby was a bit overdue, so they’ve had some time to think about names—though they aren’t ready to share that information quite yet. He says that the whole family plans to make an appearance in two days and can’t wait to meet that little Baby Sussex.

“I haven’t been in many births,” Harry added. “This is definitely my first birth. But it was amazing, absolutely incredible. As I said, I’m so incredibly proud of my wife. And as every father or parent would ever say, your baby is absolutely amazing. But this little thing is absolutely to die for.”

People Think Daenerys Targaryen Is Now the Mad Queen on Game of Thrones

This post contains spoilers for the final season of Game of Thrones. Consider yourself warned.

Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) has suffered many losses over the eight seasons of Game of Thrones. She began the series as a seemingly-fragile young woman, under the control of her brother, Viserys, and then her husband, Khal Drogo. Over time, though, she has grown into a powerful leader, the mother of dragons.

As she built her army and continued in her quest to reclaim the Iron Throne for the Targaryens, there has always been a lingering cloud from her family’s past: the Mad King, Aerys II. Dany’s father’s descent into madness led to the civil war that put Robert Baratheon on the throne and earned Jaime Lannister the nickname of “Kingslayer” when he killed Aerys. Fans have long wondered if Dany would also face the same issues—and after last night’s episode, many think it’s finally happening.

The mother of dragons saw another one of her children killed last night as Euron Greyjoy’s troops shot arrows at Rhaegal. Then she had to watch one of her closest friends and advisors, Missandei, beheaded at the hands of Cersei. This comes just after losing Jorah Mormont in the Battle of Winterfell. “In some ways, the most important thing that happens to Daenerys in four is the death of her second dragon,” showrunner D.B. Weiss explained in the Inside the Episode. “Now she’s got one dragon and that dragon presumably is just as vulnerable as Rhaegal was. So there’s this mourning of a child, which is very real to her, and then her best friend is taken. Dany knows that once Cersei has Missandei, she’s not going to see Missandei alive again.”

The look on Dany’s face at the end of the episode definitely suggests that she is furious, but might she also be “mad?”

Fans on social media seem to think so.

Others would argue that Cersei is the actual Mad Queen.

We’ll have to wait until next week to see how all of our queens decide to play their next moves. Either way, it’s sure to be good.

Somehow a Starbucks Cup Made It Into a *Game of Thrones* Scene Last Night

After last week’s episode of Game of Thrones, people were buzzing about how Arya Stark was the one to kill the Night King. But this week’s viral topic is a little…erm, lighter. It has nothing to do with the plot—though that was action-packed—and instead focuses on an apparent production blooper. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, let me take you to the exact moment in question. It happened while Tormund was talking to Daenerys, who was sitting at a table and not looking happy in the slightest. If you look closely, you’ll see something interesting on the table in front of Daenerys. Something modern. Something you drink a few times a week, at least. It’s a Starbucks cup, and fans are completely losing their minds.

This eagle-eyed fan captured video of the moment and provided some hilarious commentary. Check it out for yourself, below:

I truly have no idea how a Starbucks cup ended up in the final cut of a Game of Thrones episode. Did the beverage empire somehow break the time-space continuum? Does Daenerys have time-traveling powers we don’t know about? Is the lighting on the show just so bad that this was missed? Either way, I’m so thankful this mistake happened—if anything for the Twitter reactions. Check out just a few of them, below.

Now I’m sitting here thinking about what Starbucks orders the Game of Thrones characters would have. Arya Stark is such a badass that she’d probably drink just plain coffee with no sugar. Sansa Stark strikes me as a green tea kind of gal. All the dragons on the show would 100 percent order Caramel Frappuccinos. Cersei would walk into a Starbucks and walk out the second she realizes wine isn’t on the menu (which, understandable). Jon Snow, meanwhile, doesn’t deserve any Starbucks at all.

Game of Thrones

Arya Stark Deserved at Least a Thank You on *Game of Thrones* Last Night

Caution: Spoilers for Game of Thrones are ahead.

After watching last night’s episode of Game of Thrones, I have one thing to say to the series: Who the hell do you think you are? The levels of disrespect for the show’s female leads were running high: Jamie Lannister left Brienne of Tarth in the dust, Daenerys was insultingly shafted by Jon Snow (and possibly flipped on by her own advisors), and Arya Stark—the hero of last week’s grand-scale episode—was barely even thanked for single-handedly ending the greatest war Westeros has ever faced. Rude.

In “The Long Night,” last week’s buzzy episode, the living faced off with the dead—a war we’ve anticipated for years. Who was it that stopped the dead’s feared leader, the Night King, in one fell swoop of a dragonglass dagger? Arya Stark. Did Theon Greyjoy do it? No, the Night King murdered him. Did Jon Snow do it? No, he’s had multiple opportunities to do it with no success. It was Arya, and she did it with grace. So why was her victory not celebrated more on the series? In fact, it was barely even acknowledged.

That wasn’t the case IRL: Arya’s big moment was so memorable that an “Arya Stark Challenge” emerged among fans on Twitter, in which people parodied her nifty knife trick. Her triumph resulted in endless praise, huge cheers, and lots of conversation about how the women continually save the day on the series. Sure, some sexist men called Arya a “Mary Sue” (a character who just shows up and has no flaws), but even more people came forward to slam that insulting claim. As they should: Arya is a deadly fighter who has been training since the very first episode of the series.

So why, then, did her own brother minimize her success? While defending his support of Daenerys, he told his siblings, “You understand we’d all be dead if not for her?” Sansa retorted, “Arya’s the one who killed the Night King.” But Jon brushes her off, insisting, “Her men gave their lives defending Winterfell.” At least Sansa recognized her sister’s win, though it was one of only two mentions in the entire episode.

The other happened earlier, when Tormund raised a celebratory goblet to Daenerys, yelping, “To the Dragon Queen!” Daenerys shifted the focus and raised her own glass to Arya, saying, “To Arya Stark, the hero of Winterfell.” The men cheer, but we don’t actually see Arya being praised or embraced or celebrated. No one offers her a personal congratulations. She doesn’t body surf over a crowd of soldiers who owe their lives to her. It’s wild. It was offensive. It’s also expected.

Game of Thrones has a reputation for slighting its female characters for a reason. We’ve watched nearly every female lead on this show be either sexually abused, beaten, subdued, patronized, or some horrible combination of such. So when a woman saves the day (or rather, the Long Night) I guess I shouldn’t be so surprised that she was barely even acknowledged for her heroism.

Daenerys met a similar fate last night—in the same scene I mentioned above, Tormund fawned over Jon Snow for his contributions to the Battle of Winterfell. “He keeps fighting,” Tormund shouts gleefully as Daenerys side-eyes him. “He climbed on a fucking dragon and fought. What kind of a person climbs on a fucking dragon? A mad man. Or a king.” Or how about the Mother of Dragons, who has been riding on their backs and slaying armies by uttering “Dracarys” before Jon even knew dragons existed? During the scene Khaleesi looked like she was stewing, but she painstakingly kept a straight face through the pain—a masterclass in female anger. The scene was also, unfortunately, a masterclass in patriarchy at play: yet again men were being praised for women’s work, yet again the men placed more value on male mediocrity than female greatness.

Meghan Markle Has Officially Given Birth to a Baby Boy

It’s official: Meghan Markle is a mom. The Duchess of Sussex welcomed a baby boy, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Instagram.

“We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz,” the palace wrote in a statement on Instagram. “The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives. More details will be shared in the forthcoming days.”

The world has been waiting for Baby Sussex for what feels like ages. In October 2018, Kensington Palace announced Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were expecting their first child together.

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” the palace said in a statement. “Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

On May 6, 2019, Buckingham Palace confirmed Markle had gone into labor with Prince Harry by her side.

Unsurprisingly, Markle’s pregnancy was one of the biggest stories of the year. Everything from her maternity style to the way she held her baby bump has been analyzed by fans and critics alike. The duchess, for the most part, kept mum about the baby for the length of her pregnancy, only offering a few soundbites.

On International Women’s Day, for example, Markle said this: “I think the real treat in and of itself is being able to be here—that is such a gift on this day. And then separate from that there are the women in my life that I want to celebrate with and send some love to today. But also the men who are championing all of us as part of this journey. And then I’ll put my feet up because that’s a deserved treat, especially in this stage of pregnancy.”

Prince Harry didn’t say much, either, though he did let the press in on what he and Markle were calling the baby during pregnancy: their “little bump.”

Congrats, Meghan and Harry! We’ll, of course, keep you updated on more Baby Sussex news as it comes in.

Will Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Royal Baby Be an American Citizen?

The wait is finally over: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal baby has arrived.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that Markle gave birth to a healthy baby boy early in the morning on May 6. According to Prince Harry, both mother and son are doing great—and the littlest royal is “to die for.” The couple plans to introduce the world to their son in two days—and we will likely hear his name then as well.

The newest member of the Sussex family is now seventh in line for the throne behind his grandfather, Prince Charles; his uncle, Prince William; his cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis; and his own father. But he differs from his family in a big way: His mom is American. So does that mean Baby Sussex will also be an American citizen?

The answer is, technically, yes. According to the U.S. State Department, a child born to a U.S. citizen abroad who, in this case Markle, has lived in the U.S. at some point in the five years before the birth automatically acquires citizenship. Although, as People notes, Markle and Harry would need to “report the birth to an American consulate in order to acquire the official documents needed to prove U.S. citizenship.” Like a passport, for example.

The Palace has previously stated that the Duchess of Sussex plans to become a U.K. citizen, but that process takes some time. At the time of her engagement to Prince Harry, a spokesperson said it was “too early to say” if Markle would retain her American citizenship as well, but that’s still a possibility. In other words, both she and her new son could be citizens of both countries.

But given how private the couple has been about details of their first child’s birth, we might not get an answer to this for quite some time.

Meghan Markle Is in Labor, Buckingham Palace Confirms

It’s happening, people: Meghan Markle is in labor. Buckingham Palace confirmed the news on Monday, May 6. “The Duchess went into labour in the early hours of this morning. The Duke of Sussex was by Her Royal Highnesses’ side. An announcement will be made soon,” the palace wrote in a statement.

In October, news broke that Markle and Prince Harry were expecting their first child, and a few months later we learned her expected due date was in late April/early May. The speculation about when Markle would give birth has been wild, especially these last few weeks, so Buckingham Palace released a rare statement saying it would announce when she was in labor. It appears the palace stayed true to its word.

This story is breaking and developing. Come back here for all your Meghan Markle updates.
