Bill Nye Is Begging You to Not Use Oil on Your Scalp

I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing a lot of celebrities over the years, many of whom most people would say make sense to be featured in a beauty magazine. But every now and then, the opportunity to interview someone I never could have predicted will present itself. Most recently, it was Bill Nye. Anyone familiar with the Science Guy knows he can wax educational about all sorts of scientific topics, so I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me that he might know a thing or two about dandruff.

When he popped up on my screen for a Zoom chat, it was almost disarming to see Nye in a black lab coat instead of his trademark, industry-standard white one, but it actually made sense. He’s teamed up with Head & Shoulders, and a black lab coat shows the utmost confidence that little sprinklings of white won’t be visible. His role with the brand, aside from wearing a blue-and-white Head & Shoulders logo bow tie, is to help people better understand what’s going on up there when flakes form, not to mention ease people’s minds about how common dandruff is.

“The thing about biology is we mammals have been up against dandruff fungus for — pick a number — a million years, certainly a hundred thousand years,” he said, referring to the microbe known as Malassezia globosa. “What I found very interesting as I got into this with everybody here at the lab at Head & Shoulders is it affects people of all ancestries on every continent. So that suggests to me that it goes all the way back to our very beginnings as humans.”

But aside from his scientific curiosity about dandruff, he can personally relate to the annoyance and embarrassment that can come with its flakes. “When I was in high school, it was very troubling. I thought I was a bad person. I thought I was a dirty, bad head-management guy,” he recalls. But he didn’t know just how common the scalp issue is. “The thing that surprised me is about half the people in the world are subject to getting dandruff flakes.”

Nye says that it’s not uncommon for dandruff to start in puberty because “you’re really cranking out skin oil.” But as Jeni Thomas, PhD, the global science communications director for Procter & Gamble Hair who joined us on the call, explains — and as so many of us know from experience — we don’t leave dandruff behind in adolescence.

“It can stick with you throughout your adult years,” Dr. Thomas says. “It can come in phases.”

Whenever it may occur, the solution is to use a dandruff shampoo containing zinc pyrithione. But Bill Nye urges you to follow it up not with a regular conditioner, but one specifically meant for dandruff. “So if you use anti-dandruff shampoo — OK, that’s good. This fungus does not enjoy eating your skin oil combined with zinc. Doesn’t dig it,” Nye says. “But then, when you condition without the zinc, you’re washing away about half of the zinc pyrithione, so you’re undoing what you just did. But with conditioners that have that active ingredient in it, you’re not undoing it — you’re doing it.”

Doja Cat’s See-Through Dress at the Billboard Music Awards Deserves Its Own Award

Doja Cat has been generating attention with her fashion choices recently. With the help of her creative director Brett Alan Nelson, with whom she’s worked since 2019, Doja has delivered some scene-stealing style moments.

Her most recent fashion power move came courtesy of Schiaparelli. At the Billboard Music Awards, the artist walked the red carpet in an avant-garde creation from Daniel Roseberry’s spring 2022 couture collection, comprising a moulded velvet bodice with an “aerodynamic neckline” and an exposed sheer chest—Doja Cat nodded to modesty with gold nipple pasties by Agent Provocateur—a crepe maxi skirt, and a sweeping silk illusion train.

Doja added Roseberry’s signature surreal accessories: sculptural earrings, rings, and a planet-shaped clutch by the designer, a pair of Schiaparelli’s divisive gold shoes complete with carved toes, plus nail rings by Bijules. Yet more gold arrived in the form of the four trophies she scooped on the night.

Dove Cameron Wore a Cutout Dress With a Plunging Neckline That Goes Down Her Entire Torso

Who knew a plunging neckline could be this plunging?

For the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 15, actor and singer Dove Cameron wore a red gown with an extreme plunging neckline. Or in this case, maybe a torso cutout is a better way to phrase it. Dove Cameron’s strapless dress, which is from Ashlyn, opens at the chest and doesn’t close until well below the waist. A nude bustier with boning is visible from underneath the gown, covering the exposed chest and torso areas. The dress has a romantic skirt that accentuates the hips and gets lighter toward the bottom.

Dove Cameron styled the dramatic look simply, with no jewelry. The Descendants star wore her dark brown hair down and sleek with a middle part. For makeup, she went for a winged eyeliner and rosy cheeks that matched her rosy neutral glossy lip color.

Check out the look below:

“Sometimes she femme,” Cameron captioned a series of photos from the night that she posted on Instagram.

In February, Dove Cameron released the song “Boyfriend” which charted on the Billboard Hot 100. She was also among the 160 artists who teamed up with Planned Parenthood to sign an ad that ran in the New York Times in support of abortion rights. “We are the new generation stepping into our power,” read the ad. “Now we are being robbed of our power. We will not go back–and we will not back down.”

Machine Gun Kelly Dedicated a Song to ‘Wife’ Megan Fox and Their ‘Unborn Child’

Did Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox get married and not tell us about it? It’s possible. It’s also possible that the couple, who drink each other’s blood on occasion for ritual purposes, are unconventional when it comes to relationship status.

At the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 15 in Las Vegas Machine Gun Kelly dropped two big announcements…maybe. Right before performing his song “Two Flames,” the artist said he wrote the song for his “wife.” Then, about halfway through the performance, he added, “And this is for our unborn child.”

As of yet, neither Kelly nor Fox have announced that they got married or are expecting a child. So there is a chance that Machine Gun Kelly is simply referring to Megan Fox as his wife because she will eventually be his wife. He could also be doing something similar with the “unborn baby” part: Fox may not be pregnant, but it’s possible they’re in a planning stage or referring to the child they would like to have together one day.

Of course this isn’t the first time Fox has been called MGK’s “wife.” In February the couple attended an NBA all-star game where a sports announcer could be heard saying, “Please welcome Machine Gun Kelly and his wife, actress Megan Fox.” Fox reacted by laughing and shaking her head, which seemed to show she recognized the error but wasn’t upset by it.

Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox got engaged in January 2022. The couple announced their engagement to the public via Instagram. “In July of 2020 we sat under this banyan tree,” Fox wrote in her caption about the engagement on Insta. “We asked for magic. We were oblivious to the pain we would face together in such a short, frenetic period of time. Unaware of the work and sacrifices the relationship would require from us but intoxicated off of the love. And the karma. Somehow a year and a half later, having walked through hell together, and having laughed more than I ever imagined possible, he asked me to marry him. And just as in every lifetime before this one, and as in every lifetime that will follow it, I said yes…and then we drank each other’s blood.”

Machine Gun Kelly Wore a $30,000 Manicure to the Billboard Awards

At last night’s 2022 Billboard Music Awards, Machine Gun Kelly—who attended with fiancée Megan Fox by his side—was one of the many musical guests of honor. Not only did the artist perform last night, but he’s also nominated for top rock artist. On the red carpet, Kelly leaned into his signature aesthetic by pairing a glitzy Dolce & Gabbana turtleneck top with a spiked suit. But it was his manicure that was the real star of the outfit: It’s valued at a cool $30,000.

If you’re wondering exactly how a manicure can cost as much as a car, the answer is that Kelly’s manicure was a collaboration between the nail brand Nails of LA and the jewelry label Marrow Fine. His nails were encrusted with 880 diamonds, in total valued at $30,000.

This is far from the first time MGK has worn nail art. At the premiere of Good Mourning just this past week, for one, he hit the step and repeat in a graphic pink-and-green mani that matched his suit. (He also has his own nail polish line, a genderless nail collection titled Un/Dn Laqr.)

This look, however, is more than just a major beauty moment—it does some good, too. Seeing how such extravagance would be wasted on only one night of wear, Machine Gun Kelly plans to upcycle his manicure diamonds post-Billboards—by using them to create a collection of limited-edition rings which will be available on Marrow Fine’s website. 100% of the proceeds will be donated towards a to-be-announced charity in Cleveland, where the musician is from.

Twist: Bridgerton Season 3 Will Not Be Focusing on Benedict’s Love Story

After much speculation, we finally know who will lead Bridgerton season 3: Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).

Coughlan revealed the news on Sunday, May 15 at a panel for the Netflix show. “Like Lady Whistledown, I have been keeping a secret for quite some time and I can confirm to you all that season 3 is Colin and Penelope’s love story,” she said, per a press release from the streaming service. “I have kept that secret since two weeks into season 2.  This is the first time I am saying it here.”

Netflix revealed the news on Instagram via a society paper written by Lady Whistledown. (So…Penelope herself, I guess?) “Dearest Readers, it is only fair that in this author’s third year chronicling the marriage mart, Mayfair’s social season should find its focus on a third son…as well as a third daughter. This author can confirm that the upcoming season shall follow none other than the budding relationship between Mr. Colin Bridgerton and one Miss Penelope Featherington. With Penelope’s days as a wallflower wearing thin, will she finally take bloom? Time will tell, and as always, so will this author.”

This all may come as a bit of a surprise to those who read the Bridgerton book series. While seasons 1 and 2 followed the order of the Julia Quinn novels, Penelope and Colin’s love story actually takes place in the fourth book, Romancing Mister Bridgerton. This means the show will be skipping over Benedict Bridgerton’s romance from book three, at least for now. Whether we return to him next season or move ahead to Eloise’s story from book five remains to be seen.

Without giving away spoilers, Romancing Mister Bridgerton focuses on Penelope’s unrequited love for Colin. After he returns from a trip abroad, he starts noticing his friend in a new light…especially after they share a kiss. But will the reveal that she’s Lady Whistledown end the relationship before it even truly begins?

Reminder: Conversations with Friends Is Not a Show About Polyamory

In 2020, Hulu’s adaptation of Sally Rooney‘s novel Normal People splashed across the small screen, providing a coming-of-age story that was a respite from the height of the pandemic. Two years later, the same team has returned to bring us an adaptation of Rooney’s debut novel, Conversations with Friends, which focuses on four characters: our protagonist, Frances (Alison Oliver), her ex-girlfriend Bobbi (Sasha Lane), and married couple Nick (Joe Alwyn) and Melissa (Jemima Kirke). The four of them navigate a series of increasingly complicated relationships, culminating in an affair between Frances and Nick.

Conversations with Friends is different from your typical tale of infidelity. Most affairs are depicted as hidden in the shadows and met with an ultimatum when brought to light. Instead, Frances and Nick’s affair is eventually acknowledged and allowed by Nick’s wife, Melissa. Many have interpreted this, among other aspects of the novel, to mean that Nick and Frances have a polyamorous relationship.

We’re here to tell you that, well, that’s not how polyamory—or any form of ethical non-monogamy—actually works.

Enda Bowe

It’s understandable why folks would interpret the relationship between the characters of Conversations with Friends as polyamorous as opposed to cheating. There are some commonalities: Nick is aware of Melissa’s previous infidelities, Bobbi and Melissa have a flirtatious relationship of their own, Bobbi and Frances are exes, and towards the end of the novel, all four characters coexist while aware of the affair. In many ways, the four of them resemble a subset of polyamory called kitchen table polyamory, where partners are comfortable enough to spend time together sharing a meal, going on group outings, or even taking trips together.

What makes Nick and Frances’s relationship distinctively not polyamorous is the mindset. Polyamorous relationships require disclosure, boundary setting, and a commitment to some sort of relational equity.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker Are Now Legally Married

It sure looks like Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are now officially husband and wife. People reports that the reality star and Blink-182 musician got legally married in Santa Barbara, California on Sunday, May 15 in front of a few close friends and family.

Legally married is an important point of distinction: This isn’t the first—or last—time the couple will head toward the altar. “They had to legally get married first ahead of their big Italian wedding, which is happening very soon,” the source tells People. “All the details are set and the whole family, including all the kids, are very excited.”

You might be thinking, Wait, aren’t they already married? You would not be wrong: Last month Kardashian and Barker had a “practice” ceremony at a Las Vegas chapel just hours after Barker performed at the Grammys. However, it was not legally binding because they did not obtain a marriage license.

“Found these in my camera roll,” Kardashian wrote on Instagram later to caption a series of photos from the night. “Once upon a time in a land far, far away (Las Vegas) at 2am, after an epic night and a little tequila, a queen and her handsome king ventured out to the only open chapel with an Elvis and got married (with no license). Practice makes perfect.”

“This will not be the only ceremony to mark the couple’s commitment,” TMZ reported at the time. “We’re told there will be ‘several’ other celebrations, with lots of fanfare.” It seems those reports were true, if we’re now at ceremony two out of…three? A hundred? Las Vegas, Santa Barbara, and soon Italy—maybe third time’s a charm for Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker. Congrats!

The 12 Most Iconic Moms From TV and Movies

The “mom” characters from TV shows and movies—and their storylines—aren’t always heart-warming. If the mother isn’t killed off shortly after the opening credits (almost every Disney movie), she might be ruthless (Game of Thrones’ Cersei Lannister), vapid (Gossip Girl’s Lily van der Woodsen), or just plain cold-blooded. (Livia Soprano, you might recall, put out a hit on her own son.)

On the more pleasant, less sociopathic end of the spectrum though, you’ll find famous fictional moms who regularly demonstrate the grit and grace—and often the fashion sense—that real-life moms might find themselves aspiring to. The best among them are still flawed (we’ll pass on Carol Brady’s placid smile and Lorelai Gilmore’s jean shorts) but all 12 of the iconic TV and movie moms below have something worth copycatting.

Megan Fox Told Her Stylist She Cut a Hole in a Jumpsuit to Have Sex With Machine Gun Kelly

Some of us make sacrifices for fashion. Noted blood drinkers Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, on the other hand, sacrifice fashion for sex. What you are about to learn is an intimate detail about Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly’s sex life, so consider yourself warned.

On Monday, May 16, Megan Fox shared some photos on her Instagram account from her weekend leading up to Sunday night’s Billboard Music Awards, which she attended in Las Vegas in support of her fiancé and possible husband Machine Gun Kelly.

“An introvert in Vegas for three days during eclipse season…just SO much crying in the shower,” Fox wrote in the caption. The first posts in the slide Megan wearing a blue, sparkly jumpsuit with her long dark hair worn down and wavy. But instead of including just another style shot in the next slide, Megan Fox reminds you that she is dating Machine Gun Kelly and they have no chill (or filter). Fox shared a screengrab of a text she sent to her stylist which says, “Was this blue outfit expensive because we just cut a hole in the crotch so we could have sex.” Fox also included a shrug emoji.

Fox’s stylist replied by saying, “I hate you,” along with three crying laughing emojis. “I’ll fix it.”

Why Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly couldn’t just take the jumpsuit off to have sex is a mystery. But to be fair, jumpsuits can be a pain. We have learned so much—too much, one might argue— about Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelley since they became an item in 2020. They drink each other’s blood (for ritualistic purposes of course), MGK once accidentally stabbed himself while trying to impress Fox, and the couple is currently trying to find a wedding venue that can build the gothic “red river” they envision. I’m sure this jumpsuit incident is just the latest in a long line of headline-worthy relationship updates.
